Unlocking Authentic Confidence

Authentic confidence. It’s a phrase we hear a lot but what does it actually mean? In Episode 6 of Confidence Conversations, I sat down with the brilliant Donna Duggan, a Mailchimp Partner and email marketing consultant, to explore this topic in a way that goes far deeper than the usual “be yourself” advice.
What unfolded was a rich, thoughtful conversation about honesty, judgment, self‑trust, experience, values, and the courage to show up exactly as you are, even when your confidence wobbles.
Trusting Your Own Judgment: The Foundation of Authentic Confidence
For Donna, authentic confidence starts with one simple but powerful idea: trusting your own judgment.
In her work, that means choosing projects that align with her values and having the courage to walk away from ones that don’t. Whether it’s questionable pricing tactics or a client dynamic that doesn’t feel right, Donna’s confidence shows up in her ability to say no when something feels off.
As she put it, it’s about knowing you can deliver great work and honour your boundaries at the same time.
Stretching vs. Faking It: There’s a Difference
One of my favourite moments in our conversation was when Donna talked about the difference between stretching yourself and faking it.
Stretching is grounded in competence you know your foundations, and even if you don’t have the full solution yet, you trust you’ll figure it out. Faking it, on the other hand, is over‑promising without the skills to back it up.
Donna’s tell‑tale sign someone’s faking it? Vagueness.
If someone can’t explain how they’ll solve a problem, or worse, blusters through it, that’s a red flag.

Navigating Confidence Dips: Slow It Down
Confidence dips are part of being human and Donna has a simple, powerful strategy for those moments: slow the conversation down.
Instead of pushing through discomfort or trying to fix things immediately, she pauses. She gives herself space to think, reflect, and gather information often consulting the global Mailchimp expert community she’s part of.
Slowing down, she says, helps her respond thoughtfully rather than react from anxiety. It’s a form of grounded confidence that many of us could benefit from.
The Imposter Syndrome Conversation (and a Bit of Healthy Debate!)
Donna shared how a post reframed imposter syndrome for her — suggesting that often what we label as imposter syndrome is actually inexperience, not incapability.
While I have a slightly different view (true imposter syndrome runs deeper than self‑doubt), we both agreed on this:
- Your brain can’t distinguish between fear and excitement.
- Experience builds confidence.
- You don’t need to know everything to be brilliant at what you do.
Our shared takeaway? Whether you call it self‑doubt, stretching, or imposter moments you’re not alone.
When Life Gets Loud: Staying Authentic Through External Pressures
We also explored how external pressures, especially financial ones, can pull us away from our values.
Donna shared honestly about how, when money is tight, it’s harder to turn down work that doesn’t align with your standards. It doesn’t mean your values have changed, it just means you’re human.
Authenticity isn’t rigid. It’s contextual. Sometimes your intention (providing for yourself or your family) matters just as much as the action itself.
Practices That Build Authentic Confidence
Donna’s confidence toolkit is refreshingly simple no complicated routines or motivational mantras required.
- Planning and structure
For Donna, planning is the bedrock of confidence. Reading questions in advance, preparing thoroughly, and having a clear process helps her feel grounded before stepping into anything new.
- Daily rituals and routines
Consistency makes her feel centred. Whether it’s having tea in the same cup or following a morning routine, these small habits create calm and that calm creates confidence.
- Slowing down conversations
This helps her regain clarity and control when things feel fast or uncertain.
- Asking for help (without shame)
One of her favourite phrases now is: “I don’t know but I’ll find out. That’s confidence at its finest for me.
- Using AI as a critical thinking partner
Donna shared how she uses AI to challenge her thinking, check loopholes, and strengthen her proposals not to replace her expertise, but to act as a sparring partner.
What Authentic Confidence Really Looks Like
By the end of our conversation, a clear picture emerged: Authentic confidence isn’t loud, polished, or perfect.
It’s honest, grounded, thoughtful, and deeply personal.
- It’s trusting your judgment.
- Slowing down when needed.
- Knowing your values.
- Being willing to say “I don’t know.”
- And building experience one step at a time.
Donna’s perspective is a refreshing reminder that confidence isn’t something you “perform” it’s something you grow into, by being true to yourself even when it’s uncomfortable.
